The City of Longview was founded in 1870 when O.H. Methvin deeded 100 acres of land to the Southern Pacific Railroad for the price of one dollar. The railroad laid out a new town on the newly purchased land. Management for the railroad named the settlement Longview, reportedly because of the impressive view from Mr. Methvin's house.

Longview incorporated in May 17, 1871, the first community in Gregg County to do so. The population of Longview grew to 5,036 by the mid 1930's and more than doubled to 13,753 by 1940, thanks to the discovery of crude oil in the area.

With over 73,000 residents, the future of Longview looks strong as it continues to see steady growth while encompassing services and opportunities for business, residents, and visitors. Community highlights include quality medical care with highly-regarded hospitals, excellent municipal water resources, lack of traffic congestion, low cost of living, strong local economy, excellent housing options, numerous parks and walking trails, public transportation, an active arts community, and nearby lakes for fishing and boating.
